A preview of the August 25, 2017,
edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

August 25 - 31, 2017

Dear Readers,

With this year's Concours Week in the history books, city leaders have turned their attention to more pressing matters: When should the city's next street dance take place? Mary Schley reports.

Speaking of the Concours, somebody who was undoubtedly in town for the festivities apparently took his own personal celebration a bit too far Friday when he got his Bentley SUV stuck in the sand at Carmel River State Beach. Mary Schley has that one, too.

Congressman Jimmy Panetta has some advice for President Donald Trump about his Afghanistan policy -- advice that comes from Panetta's personal experience as a military officer in that country. Kelly Nix has the details.

A city councilwoman is trying to figure out what to do about a power pole that suddenly appeared in her home's ocean view. The Frank Lloyd Wright house on Carmel Point is getting some upgrades to the rock wall that protects it from ocean waves. It already has one new roundabout, but Highway 68 may get a lot more. West Nile virus has suddenly reappeared in the county. Should you worry? The new bridge under construction across Pfeiffer Canyon in Big Sur has taken another major step forward. We have a special report about how locals reacted when they witnessed the solar eclipse at a unique Oregon festival. Please don't forget that the Columbia Journalism Review's video essay about The Pine Cone is still available here. And my editorial points out that, while you may think you're given too many silly warnings about this and that everywhere you turn, those warnings may actually be necessary -- if not for you, then for your stupid friends.

As always, I invite you to send me any questions, comments or concerns about our newspaper, and to contact me if you need help making the most of it on your computer, smartphone or tablet.
