A preview of the December 29, 2017,
edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

Dec. 29, 2017 - Jan. 4, 2018

Dear Readers,

The target of the harassment complaint at city hall we reported about last week has been identified, and it's the mayor, Steve Dallas. Mary Schley has the details.

Monterey County is sticking to some pretty tight regulations for legal marijuana farms in Big Sur -- rules that threaten to leave out some people who have already been growing weed for a long time. Chris Counts has that one.

A string of burglaries in town has been keeping cops busy -- and now they think they've solved a rash of break-ins that happened on Christmas Day. Mary Schley has that story, too.

One of Carmel's most accomplished photographers was on the front lines of the huge fire that hit Santa Barbara County earlier this month, and he has a dramatic report about the firefighters' perilous battles, and his own close calls. Speaking of fire, Rep. Jimmy Panetta has come out against federal acquisition of a Big Sur ranch over concerns about wildfires. A man who allegedly stole parts from a valuable piano in Pebble Beach was subsequently killed in an unrelated car crash. David Fink is facing a do-or-die hearing about the condo he wants to build on the roof of Cantinetta Luca. And my editorial says Jimmy Panetta is right to put the brakes on federal acquisition of open space until funding is in place to keep those properties maintained and actually open to the public.

As always, I invite you to send me any questions, comments or concerns about our newspaper, and to contact me if you need help making the most of it on your computer, smartphone or tablet.
