A preview of the July 24, 2015, edition
        of The Carmel Pine Cone

July 24 - 30, 2015

Dear Readers,

Siding with the people who say it will be beneficial, and ignoring the pleas of people who say it will be dangerous, the board of supervisors this week approved the realignment of Rio Road as it makes its way out of town past the Mission. Mary Schley reports.

A freak lightning and thunder storm last Sunday morning not only scared everybody out of bed, it also sparked several fires. And a house fire in Pebble Beach Thursday night would have been much worse if not for a quick-thinking neighbor. Mary Schley has both those stories.

Congestion in Big Sur has reached unprecedented levels this summer, locals say, and is causing major headaches not only on Highway 1, but on the narrow access road to a beach that was once considered "secret." Chris Counts has that one.

The Silicon Valley CEO who stepped on a hornet's nest when she applied for a permit to demolish what many consider to be a significant Pebble Beach house has hired a local lawyer and is responding to her critics — and she's not pulling any punches. Kelly Nix has the details.

A Moss Landing desal plan competing with Cal Am's Marina operation doesn't have a single permit or even an EIR but could be up and running by 2017, its proponents say. Are they kidding? One of Carmel's oldest inns is closing, and a popular restaurant in the same building is facing an uncertain future. A long, curving water slide is being installed in Carmel Valley — but not for the purpose you might think. Local state parks need a host of new facilities and amenities — or do they? We have a special section for you with lots of interesting features about your family's best friends. And my editorial says that the cost of giving 12 million Californians free medical care is even higher than advertised.

Thank you for your interest in The Pine Cone. As always, I am available to respond to your questions, comments or concerns, and to offer advice about how best to read it on your computer, smartphone or iPad.
