Dear Readers,
The county board of supervisors
slammed the door on the Carmel Canine Center
Tuesday, rejecting a permit for the center on an 5-0
vote. And before the vote, several supervisors
pointedly criticized the planning commission for
approving it. Chris Counts reports.
After being shut down for five months, the desal
test well in Marina was restarted Tuesday. Is this a
hopeful sign for our water supply? Everybody
certainly hopes so, because, as Jason Burnett
observed this week, besides all its other
threatening consequences, our continuing water
shortage could influence a decision about whether
the NPS and DLI are able to stay put. Kelly Nix has
both stories.
The sheriff says it won't be until the middle of
next year that he'll be able to restore overnight
patrols in Pebble Beach and Carmel Valley. Kelly Nix
also has that one.
Dave Potter had a meeting with Massy Mehdipour last
week to discuss the county's plan to require her to
"mothball" her home near Cypress Point. An appellate
court has reaffirmed the murder conviction of Jacobo
Ruelas. Two rare fish washed ashore in Monterey Bay
last weekend. A public meeting on the future of
Sunset Center generated some rather unusual ideas.
This week we reveal the winners of the 2015 Golden
Pine Cones -- if you only want the best, don't miss
the special section. And my editorial points out
that even the rich have the right to claim at least
minimal services from the government in exchange for
all the taxes they pay.
As always, I am available to respond to questions,
comments or concerns, and to offer advice about how
best to read our newspaper on your computer,
smartphone or iPad.
