A preview of the December 8, 2017,
edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

December 8 - 14, 2017

Dear Readers,

With petitions circulating to get started on a government takeover of Cal Am, the lines are starting to be drawn between the water company and its opponents -- and nowhere was that more evident than on the street in front of the post office last Friday. But what does all this bode for the future of our badly needed water project? Kelly Nix reports.

Figuring out who should get a discount on fees charged for downtown events has been a particularly knotty problem for the city council, and this week, when the Concours on the Avenue was up for discussion, the issue took a very unexpected turn. Mary Schley has that one.

The rash of car break-ins has the city looking for better ways to deter or catch thieves -- including installing cameras to record license plate numbers at the entrances to town. Mary Schley has that story, too.

The Chowchilla kidnapper who sued a Monterey County man for mismanaging his Christmas tree farm now insists (through his lawyer) that he's actually not doing business at all while he's in prison. The restaurant owner who wants to build a condo on his roof has run into some new roadblocks. Congressman Jimmy Panetta -- despite being no fan of President Trump -- this week opposed a motion in Congress to start impeachment proceedings against the president. One of this country's major retailers of outdoor clothing has launched an effort to shut down a fish rescue facility in Carmel Valley. Residents of a Big Sur neighborhood near Pfeiffer Beach are trying to cut back on the number of tourists using their narrow access road. We have another Holiday Guide to help you make sure the people on your gift list get something local. And my editorial looks at the real causes of California's shortage of affordable housing.

As always, I invite you to send me any questions, comments or concerns about our newspaper, and to contact me if you need help making the most of it on your computer, smartphone or tablet.
